Nike have announced that they will be hosting a series of design workshops. Taking place in Paris, London, New York, Seoul, Shanghai and Tokyo this month, Nike: On Air will bring participants closer to the brand’s footwear design processes and give attendees across each of the six cities a chance to create their very own version of one of the brand’s most iconic trainers.
Those lacking a background in product design need not worry — Nike: On Air will give anyone and everyone a shot at creating one of 10 Air Max icons for their city. Workshop participants will be shepherded through the entire design process, from briefing to concept building to mood boarding, by guest mentors.
In London, Ma-tt-er’s Seetal Solanki will be lending her expert eye for materials to proceedings alongside artist and designer Dom Sebastian supporting on colour, the Concept Kicks duo helping with silhouette selection and menswear designer Alexandra Hackett will be getting into the details with embellishment.
Using local environment as a creative jumping off point, London: On Air participants will design a new Air Max for their home city inspired by their experiences of and in it. The workshop will move through five stages of footwear creation from concept development to silhouette selection to material exploration, before finally moving into colour exploration and embellishment.
At the end of the week, completed Air Max concepts will be submitted to a panel of expert judges, among them Nike designers and city ambassadors including Skepta, who starred in Nike’s acclaimed Nothing Beats a Londoner campaign along with Nate Jobe, Courtney Dailey and Alexandra Hackett. The panel of experts will select three designs created during London: On Air to feature on the global Nike: On Air voting hub – where the world will decide which design best represents London
The winning London Air Max will be produced by Nike at a future date, and its designer will travel to the Nike campus in Oregon to meet members of the product team and bring their concept to life.
