AIGA – American Institute of Graphic Arts – What is it?

The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) is a professional design organisation. Members practice all forms of communication design, including graphic design, typography, interaction design, user experience, branding and identity. The organisation’s objective is to be the standard bearer of professional ethics and practice in the design profession. There are more than 18,000 members and 73 chapters, and more than 200 student groups in the United States. In 2005, AIGA changed its name to “AIGA, a professional association for design,” abandoning the” American Institute of Graphic Arts” to welcome all design disciplines.

What do they do?

AIGA works to help people in business, the media, and the government understand the importance of design and designers. They thoughtfully discuss current issues and show the most exciting design work to inspire both designers and the general public. The goal is to improve professional development by providing stimulating learning opportunities for everyone.

Promote the value of design.

They work to increase the value and deepen the impact of design across all disciplines on business, society, and our collective future. This effort ranges from content that defines global practice to events that connect and catalyze. They achieve this by establishing international norms and moral guidelines and opening up effective tools and resources to everyone.

History

A small group of graphic designers, printers, publishers, and illustrators formed AIGA in New York City in 1914. Since then, more than 70 chapters have been established to serve the design community, which has grown into a national network of qualified designers, educators, students, and enthusiasts.

From our early history advocating for industry standards to launching journals and exhibitions, we continue to look to the future, innovate, and change how we interact with the world.
