Oscar Tusquets Blanca – Spanish painter, architect and designer

Oscar Tusquets Blanca is a Spanish painter, architect and designer. He was born and is professionally active in Barcelona, Spain.

Biography

He worked in the studio of architects Frederico Correa and Alfonso Mila. In 1964, (with fellow Escuela de Arquitectura graduates Pep Bonet, Cristian Cirici, and Lluis Clotet) founded Studio PER. 

In 1972, Studio PER members with others (particularly Xavier Carulla) formed B.d Ediciones de Diseño, which produced many of Tusquets’s furniture and product designs and others considered too risky by Spanish manufacturers at the time.

In 1983, he was one of the 11 architects to design a coffee and tea set by Alessi. Collaborating with Lluis Clotet until 1985, his controversial 1972 Belvedere Regas building was one of the first Post-Modernist structures, widely published and highly contentious. The writings of Robert Venturi had strongly influenced Tusquets. 

1975—76 as an adjunct professor of the design chairmanship, he was in charge of projects at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura. 

A visiting professor at the Rhode Island School of Design; in 1980, lecturer at Harvard and Yale Universities; In 1984, at the University of Southern California and University of California at Berkeley; 

In 1981, at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale, Lausanne; in 1983, at Kunstakademie, Diisseldorf;

In 1983, at the architecture faculty, Karlsruhe; in 1984, at Institut francais d’Architecture; 

in 1982, 1984, and 1985, at Universidad Internacional Menéndez y Pelayo. 

He was a partner in the publishing firm Tusquets Editores, which issued the Spanish edition of Venturi’s Learning from Las Vegas (1972); 

In 1985, formed a partnership with Carlos Diaz, designing the 1991 pavilion and entrance, Parc de la Villette, Paris, apartment house for Nexus World Kashil, Fukuoka, and 1989 restoration and addition, Palau de la Musica Catalana (by Domenech i Montaner in the early 20th century).

Exhibitions

Showed regularly at the Triennale di Milano and international exhibitions; participated (with Clotet) in the 1980 ‘Design Forum’ in Linz. Awards included 1965, 1972, and 1983 Premio FAD de Interiorismo; 1979 Premio FAD de Arquitectura; 1980 Premio FAD and Premio Nacional de Restauracion; 1974, 1979, and 1980 Delta de Oro ADI/FAD de Diseno Industrial; and 1984 Critica and Leon de Oro for best illustrated book at the XII Bien- nale di Venezi.
