Beautiful Japanese-style teapots

Iron kettles boil water for tea preparation in the Japanese Way of Tea. Iron kettle casting with sand moulds has a long tradition in Japan, dating back to the Heian and Kamakura times.

Japan has a long and illustrious tradition of iron casting, which has been used to make a wide range of objects, from swords and cooking pots to hoes and countless other items, including kettles for the Way of Tea. The iron used in the past was known as wazuku and was made of “sand iron” or satetsu. This satetsu was mined in the mountains and processed by murage craftsmen by smelting.
