MoMA Now: Highlights from The Museum of Modern Art, New York

by Quentin Bajac (Author), Christophe Cherix (Author), & 5 more

To commemorate the museum’s 90th anniversary and the opening of the new MoMA after its historic expansion in October 2019, the book was published as a large-format hardcover.

With the reopening of its significantly refurbished and expanded midtown campus in October 2019, the Museum of Modern Art marked its 90th anniversary. MoMA Now is an extended and expanded edition of MoMA Highlights that gives a rich chronological overview of the art of the past 150 years, chosen from the museum’s permanent collection of approximately 200,000 pieces across six curatorial divisions, and was released to coincide with the reopening.

The book introduces readers to some of the most beloved artworks in the museum’s collection, including iconic works by Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, and Andy Warhol, among many others, as well as lesser-known but equally fascinating and significant objects of art, architecture, and design beginning with a photograph taken around 1867 and ending in 2017, with an Oscar-nominated documentary film.

MoMA Now honours the museum’s vast collection and the wide range of contemporary challenges and ideas. The book is not intended to provide a comprehensive review of the museum’s collection or make a definitive statement about it. Instead, it is intended to investigate the collection’s richness and range of possibilities and suggest new and inventive ways of understanding the works of art that make it up. This new edition includes 170 works that were not included in previous editions and a more substantial representation of works by women, artists of colour and artists worldwide. It is both a record of the museum’s past and a statement in expectation of an exciting future.
