Biography
He was an apprentice in the studio of Giovanni Battista Gianotti, a painter, furniture designer, and decorator; in 1921, he opened Bottega di Pietro Chiesa, Milan; in 1927, (with Gio Ponti, Michele Marelli, Tomaso Buzzi, Emilio Lancia, and Paolo Venini) founded Il Labirinto, which produced high-quality glassware.
In 1933, Ponti and Luigi Fontana founded Fontana Arte, which incorporated the Bottega di, Pietro Chiesa. As Fontana Arte’s artistic director, Chiesa became known for his innovative glass and wood-and-glass furniture; he is possibly best known for his 1936 Luminator floor lamp produced in polished brass, one of his simpler pieces. St. Gobain acquired the Fontana Arte factory in 1945.
