The Origins of Stained Glass

The term stained glass covers several related techniques. In its traditional architectural form, a window consists of individual pieces of colored or painted glass joined by narrow strips of lead known as cames. These lead lines provide structural support while also contributing to the composition.

Glassmakers produced colored glass by adding metallic compounds to the molten glass mixture. The color therefore existed within the material rather than being applied only to its surface. This type of glass is commonly called pot-metal glass.

Medieval glassmakers also developed flashed glass. To make it, they combined a thin layer of strongly colored glass—often red—with a thicker layer of clear or lightly colored glass. Portions of the colored layer could then be removed to create highlights and intricate details. Ancient Practices in Various Cultures

Colored glass existed long before the great cathedrals of Europe. Ancient Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Roman craftspeople made glass vessels, ornaments and mosaics, while Roman builders also used glass in window openings. These early windows were generally smaller, thicker and less transparent than later architectural glass.

The history was not exclusively European or Christian. Builders in parts of the Middle East and Asia inserted pieces of colored glass into pierced stone, wood or plaster screens. These traditions created luminous patterns while controlling heat, glare and privacy.

In Europe, archaeological evidence shows that early medieval religious buildings incorporated colored window glass. Pieces discovered at the monastery of Monkwearmouth-Jarrow in England date from around the seventh century. The Evolution of Stained Glass

Medieval Innovations

Between approximately 1150 and 1500, stained glass became one of Europe’s most important monumental arts. Workshops combined glassmaking, drawing, painting, firing, metalwork and architectural installation. The resulting windows were not simply transparent pictures. They were carefully designed systems of light, color and line.

A medieval artist began with a design showing the composition and arrangement of colors. This preliminary design was sometimes called a vidimus. The design was then enlarged to full scale so the individual pieces of glass could be cut.

Artists painted faces, drapery, inscriptions and other details onto the glass with vitreous paint. Firing in a kiln fused the painted marks to the surface. The finished pieces were fitted into H-shaped lead cames, soldered together and waterproofed with putty. Iron supports helped secure large panels of stained glass within the building.

The lead lines were essential to both structure and appearance. They outlined figures, separated areas of color and established the visual rhythm of the composition. In accomplished medieval work, structure and image became inseparable.

Surviving windows from Canterbury Cathedral, made in 1178–1180, illustrate the scale and ambition of Romanesque stained glass. The life-size figures originally belonged to an extensive series representing the ancestors of Christ. They rank among the oldest surviving examples of monumental English glass painting, according to the J. Paul Getty Museum.

Gothic Architectural Influence

Gothic architecture created exceptional opportunities for large stained glass windows. Ribbed vaults, pointed arches and external buttressing helped direct structural loads away from the walls. Builders could therefore create larger window openings than those found in many earlier masonry buildings.

At the Abbey Church of Saint-Denis near Paris, the rebuilt east end completed under Abbot Suger during the 1140s offered an influential union of architecture and colored light. Subsequent cathedrals incorporated tall lancet windows, elaborate tracery and monumental rose windows.

These windows performed several functions. They presented biblical narratives, saints, patrons, trades and moral themes. They also established atmosphere. Light passing through blue, red, green and amber glass changed the character of the interior throughout the day.

As The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes, stained glass was central to the experience of the Gothic cathedral. Its imagery helped turn the building into a visual account of Christian belief, while its luminous color evoked an idealized heavenly world.

Renaissance Expansion and Techniques

During the Renaissance, stained glass compositions increasingly reflected developments in painting and printmaking. Artists pursued greater naturalism, spatial depth, anatomical detail and complex shading. Figures became more sculptural, while architectural settings and landscapes created an illusion of recession.

Silver stain allowed artists to introduce several yellow and orange tones without separating each color with lead. Flashed glass could be engraved or abraded to reveal contrasting layers. By the middle of the sixteenth century, a broader range of vitreous enamels enabled painters to add blue, green, purple and other colors to clear glass.

These innovations encouraged larger painted areas and finer detail. In some cases, the window began to resemble a translucent painting divided across several panels. Small secular roundels also became popular in private houses, civic buildings and guild halls.

Political, religious and aesthetic changes later reduced demand in parts of Europe. Iconoclasm, warfare and changing architectural taste led to the destruction or removal of many windows. By the nineteenth century, however, the Gothic Revival encouraged artists and architects to study medieval examples and recover traditional methods. The V&A’s account of the Gothic Revival documents this return to pot-metal glass, prominent lead lines and integrated architectural design.

The nineteenth-century revival also shaped the Arts and Crafts movement. Edward Burne-Jones adapted his distinctive figure style to windows produced with Morris & Co., reconnecting narrative art with architectural craft.

Art Nouveau extended this revival into secular interiors. Jacques Gruber used botanical forms, layered color and expressive leadwork to integrate stained glass with the architecture of Nancy.

The Artistry Behind Stained Glass

The Design Process

A successful window begins with its setting. The artist considers the size and proportions of the opening, the direction of the light, the distance from which the work will be viewed and the architecture surrounding it.

The principal stages generally include:

  1. Preparing preliminary sketches and agreeing on the subject, style and budget.
  2. Producing a full-size drawing, traditionally called a cartoon.
  3. Dividing the design into shapes that can be cut from available glass.
  4. Selecting colors, textures and degrees of transparency.
  5. Cutting the individual pieces of glass.
  6. Painting, staining, etching or firing selected details when required.
  7. Joining the pieces with lead came or copper foil.
  8. Soldering, waterproofing, reinforcing and installing the completed panels.

Traditional lead came remains well suited to architectural windows. The copper-foil method, popularized in American decorative glasswork during the late nineteenth century, wraps each piece in adhesive copper foil before soldering. It permits finer lines and irregular shapes, making it particularly useful for lamps, ornaments and small decorative panels.

The Use of Colored Glass

Colored glass does more than fill an outlined drawing. Its translucency, opacity, texture and thickness influence the way a composition behaves in changing light.

Transparent cathedral glass transmits light relatively clearly. Opalescent glass has a milky or clouded appearance and may contain several colors within one sheet. Textured glass can suggest water, foliage, fabric or atmospheric movement. Flashed glass enables an artist to create more than one value or color effect within a single piece.

American artists John La Farge and Louis Comfort Tiffany transformed the medium during the late nineteenth century by exploiting opalescent glass, layered construction and material texture. The Metropolitan Museum of Art records that both artists had patented forms of opalescent window glass by 1881. Their work allowed folds of fabric, flower petals, skies and water to be suggested by the glass itself rather than by painted detail alone. Contemporary stained glass window panels range from traditional pictorial compositions to geometric abstraction. They may be permanently installed in an opening, suspended in front of an existing window or mounted within a protective frame.

Large stained glass windows require careful engineering. Their weight must be transferred safely to the surrounding structure, and extensive installations may need reinforcing bars or divided sections. Exterior protective glazing can shield historically important glass from impact and weather, but it must be designed with adequate ventilation to avoid trapping heat and moisture.
