Nervi recognised that corrugation, curvature and folded geometry could make slender elements considerably stiffer.
The significance of ferrocement extended beyond the material itself. It supported a system of small-scale prefabrication in which repeatable pieces could be formed and assembled into much larger structures. This process reduced dependence on elaborate full-scale formwork while preserving the ability to create complex vaults and patterned surfaces.
Nervi’s work therefore belongs to the history of both architecture and production design. Standardisation did not eliminate visual richness. Repeated components generated dense patterns of ribs, coffers and openings, turning economical construction into architectural character. The beauty of the finished space arose from the honest legibility of its making.
Torino Esposizioni as a Turning Point
The Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Turin provides the book’s culminating case study. Nervi and his construction company were commissioned during the post-war reconstruction of the exhibition complex. The project required an expansive, unobstructed interior capable of accommodating changing displays and large public events, while working within demanding practical and economic limits.
The principal hall opened in 1948. Its great barrel-vaulted space brought together reinforced concrete, ferrocement elements, prefabrication and expressive structural rhythm. From the floor, the roof reads as a continuous patterned surface. Its repeated elements nevertheless belong to a carefully organised construction system rather than a decorative covering.
Torino Esposizioni marked a decisive synthesis of ideas developed during the preceding decades. Nervi had moved from individual experiments and patents towards an integrated method capable of producing architecture at a monumental scale. Later halls extended the complex, but the 1948 project already demonstrated the principles that would distinguish his mature work.
