Emeco and Naoto Fukasawa collaborated on the “Za” stool, which is available in three heights and is guaranteed for life.
The name “Za” was chosen by Naoto Fukasawa, an industrial designer from Tokyo, and it means “a place to sit” in Japanese. It is a term that alludes to the multi-functionality of a simple stool that can be used anywhere, indoors and outdoors, an object that people will intuitively choose to sit on.
Za is a simple and understated stool designed by a conscientious designer focusing on intentional simplicity – a perfect match for Emeco’s aluminium quality tradition.
The stool’s design is the outcome of Fukasawa’s desire to create a comfortable seat with a defined rim that keeps you sat in the stool’s centre. In addition, Fukasawa imagined a stool that would put people in a “good mood when they sit.” As a result, the simple, joyous Za is a timeless classic that, like its forefather, the original 1006 Navy chair, can be used, enjoyed, maintained, and passed down for generations.
“The Navy chair is one of the most identified icons in America. I had an image of a round stool, which could become a natural part of the Navy chair family, like a brother or sister. I embodied that thought into the design of the Za stool.”

Stools are available in three different heights: small, counter height, and bar stool height. Za is handcrafted in Emeco’s Pennsylvania factory, much like their original Navy chair, using a 77-step process. Emeco’s hallmark material, recycled aluminium, is light, sturdy, non-corrosive, fire-resistant, and has a low carbon impact. It’s also resistant to disinfectants and antimicrobial cleansers used nowadays. A lifetime warranty covers Za stools. Za is available in six powder coat colours that match the spirit of the collection: Warm Grey, Light Brown, Light Blue, Green, Orange, and Charcoal, as well as a natural, hand-brushed anodized finish, a hand-polished finish, and a natural, hand-brushed anodized finish. Stools with a hand-brushed finish and powder coat finish are ideal for outdoor use.
