Interlübke, a renowned furniture manufacturer based in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, Germany, has emerged as one of the country’s leading brands in the industry. Founded by brothers Hans and Leo Lübke, Interlübke initially focused on producing polished bedroom furniture. However, a stroke of luck combined with innovation paved the way for the company’s success.
The Endless Cupboard: A Revolutionary Storage Solution
In the early 1960s, Interlübke faced its first financial crisis. Fortunately, introducing a groundbreaking product, the ‘endless cupboard’ storage unit (now known as SL), saved the company. This storage system was designed by Swiss furniture designer Walter Müller and his office, Team Form, and featured a simple yet ingenious concept. Its base and top were identical, allowing 180-degree rotation, transforming the top into the base. Adding cupboards together could create a series of wall units where all doors open in the same direction. This innovative system maximized space utilization and offered additional storage options through shelves, baskets, and drawers. The success of the SL storage system not only rescued Interlübke but also inspired numerous imitations in the industry.
Collaboration with Designers: A Key to Continuity
Interlübke’s commitment to collaboration with designers has been instrumental in maintaining the company’s product range and ensuring continuity. The Cube and Travo cabinet systems, designed by Werner Aisslinger and Rolf Heide, respectively, exemplify Interlübke’s dedication to innovative furniture solutions. Both systems can be either stacked up or wall-mounted based on individual requirements. Travo’s aluminium or leather internal units are easily movable, and its distinct U-shaped handle stands out while offering effortless operation. Rolf Heide also revamped the SL storage system, introducing a modernized version. Additionally, the Aparo walk-in storage system and Studimo shelf system, designed by Karl Odermatt and Franz Hero from the new Team Form, further demonstrate Interlübke’s commitment to contemporary and functional furniture design.
Overcoming Challenges: A Legacy of Adaptation
In the late 1990s, Interlübke faced another crisis due to a poorly defined corporate profile and disappointing financial performance. To combat this situation, the company introduced the EO storage system, developed by Wulf Schneider. The EO is a brilliantly designed light cube that can be programmed and changed to various colours, enabling users to customize the ambience according to mood and environment. This innovative product helped Interlübke overcome its challenges and reinforced its position in the market.
Preserving Craftsmanship in Modern Furniture
While Interlübke is widely recognized as the inventor of the modern continuous wardrobe, its origins lie in crafting high-quality individual pieces of furniture. The company remains committed to creating modern furniture with sophisticated designs that enhance people’s lives. Each piece is meticulously planned, whether as a standalone unit or an integrated concept solution, providing a sense of belonging and comfort wherever it is placed.
Germany in Private: A Tribute to Interlübke’s Legacy
2012 Interlübke celebrated its 75th anniversary by publishing the representative opinion research study “Germany in Private – How the Germans Live.” This unique gift to the nation showcased the company’s commitment to understanding the evolving lifestyle needs of Germans. Under the leadership of Leo Lübke, who has been managing the brand since 2006, Interlübke embarked on new initiatives to create a dedicated showroom for dealers at its site in September 2015. This showroom is a living product and factory exhibition showcasing Interlübke’s premium collection, furnishing concepts, and the latest innovations.
Interlübke and Domovari: A New Chapter
In August 2022, Interlübke was acquired by Domovari, continuing its journey as a family-run business. Both companies are committed to producing high-quality furniture through meticulous craftsmanship, focusing on manufacturing in Germany. Domovari’s Managing Director, Dr. Frank Oehmke, expressed confidence in the brand’s future, believing Interlübke’s strong reputation and trustworthy partnership with specialized trade and end customers will endure.
