Historical Perspective: A Blend of Cultures in Design
The Michael Graves Salt Shaker is not just a utility for your kitchen but a piece of art that blends functionality with aesthetic appeal. Designed in 1990 by the iconic Michael Graves for Alessi, this salt shaker is a testament to the era of Postmodernism, where the ordinary is made extraordinary. Graves’ design philosophy was deeply influenced by European and American Pop Art, and pre-Columbian cultures, all of which are evident in the sleek contours and playful elements of this product.
Visual References: The Aesthetics of Functionality
Made in Italy, the Michael Graves Salt Shaker boasts a cylindrical, perforated stainless steel body with a gleaming mirror-polished finish. The lid, crafted from colored polyamide thermoplastic resin, adds a pop of color and visual interest, making this piece a standout on any table. Measuring 4.5h x 2.5″ diam, this salt shaker is not just a tool but a conversation piece.
Design Philosophy: More Than a Salt Shaker
This product isn’t just about its function. It’s a symbol of how design intersects with our daily lives, bringing beauty and joy into everyday moments. Both Michael Graves and Alessi are represented in MoMA’s collection, a nod to their significant contributions to contemporary design. This salt shaker matches other Michael Graves pieces from Alessi, ensuring a cohesive and visually appealing collection for your dining experience.

This salt shaker is designed with the modern home in mind. It’s dishwasher safe, though a dry-cycle is not recommended, ensuring that its beauty and functionality are preserved for years to come. The product comes thoughtfully packaged, making it an ideal gift for those who appreciate the finer things in life.
