Roberto Sambonet, born into the distinguished Sambonet family known for their silversmithing since 1856, was inherently linked to design and artistry. His birthplace, Vercelli, Italy, was his home and the crucible for his creative development. The Sambonet family’s ties to the House of Savoy and their establishment of a factory for industrial silverware production in 1924 marked the beginning of a legacy intertwined with Italy’s cultural and artistic history.

Global Influence and Design Innovations

Educated at the Brera Academy and the Politecnico di Milano, Sambonet’s early academic pursuits in architecture expanded globally when he moved to Brazil in 1948. There, he taught at the São Paulo Museum of Art’s Bauhausian-inspired school, founded by Pietro Maria Bardi. This experience broadened his artistic perspectives, subsequently enriching his design philosophy upon his return to Milan in 1953.

Sambonet’s career flourished in Milan as he embraced his heritage and innovation. He designed celebrated items such as the “Center Line” kitchenware series and the “Empilage” glassware for Baccarat. His designs were not merely functional but were embodiments of aesthetic refinement and practicality, illustrating his mastery of marrying form with function—principles he upheld throughout his career.

Artistic Pursuits and Contributions

Beyond his contributions to industrial design, Sambonet was a prolific painter and draughtsman, evidenced by his varied artistic works, including those held in prestigious collections and featured in exhibitions like the MoMA’s inaugural installation of Architecture and Design. His dual role as an artist and designer allowed him to traverse and seamlessly blend the boundaries of art and functionality.

Legacy and Lasting Impact

Roberto Sambonet’s legacy extends beyond his creations. As an art director for Zodiac magazine and collaborator with significant brands like Tiffany and Richard Ginori, he influenced the design, graphic, and visual communication realms. His awards, including multiple Compasso d’Oro honours, underscore his significant design contributions and enduring influence on Italian and international design landscapes.
