This article forms part of the Decorative and Applied Arts Encyclopedia, a master reference hub providing a structured overview of design history, materials, movements, and practitioners.

The “Japan Week LA” special event series aimed to enhance public understanding and connections between the United States and Japan. It featured a wide range of activities including performances, exhibits, demonstrations, ceremonies, and discussions on current affairs.

At that time, the United States and Japan were caught in an intense trade conflict. Despite this, both nations were becoming more reliant on each other, underscoring the need for improved communication.

There was a prevailing view among Americans, who often saw the Japanese through the lens of trade and commodities, rather than as individuals with unique personalities.
