A Visionary in Lighting Design
Ernesto Gismondi, the visionary founder of Artemide Group, revolutionised the world of lighting design with his pioneering approach to using light as a form of ‘construction material’. Born in San Remo, Italy, in 1931, Gismondi was a distinguished designer, noted entrepreneur, and academic. His academic journey in aeronautical and missile engineering from Milan Polytechnic and the Professional School of Engineering in Rome equipped him with a unique perspective on design and materials, which he brilliantly applied to the field of decorative arts.

Artemide and the Metamorphosis Collection
Under Gismondi’s leadership, Artemide became synonymous with innovative and emotionally impactful lighting solutions. One of his significant contributions was the Metamorfosis collection, developed through the ‘Human Light’ philosophy that emphasises the symbiotic relationship between light and human interaction. This collection includes twelve seminal products and showcases how Gismondi’s designs transcended traditional boundaries, turning lighting fixtures into dynamic elements that enhance the environment and the experience.
Contributions to the Memphis Movement
Gismondi’s role in the Memphis movement further underlines his influence on contemporary design. This avant-garde movement, known for its colourful and unconventional designs that broke away from the norms of the 70s design aesthetics, was significantly bolstered by Gismondi’s participation and leadership. His engagement with Memphis and subsequent efforts with Meta-Memphis highlight his ability to navigate and shape design trends, continuously pushing the envelope on creativity and innovation.

Ernesto Gismondi’s legacy is decorated with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Compasso D’Oro for Lifetime Achievement in 2018. His role as vice president of ADI (Associazione Design Industriale) and contributions to various educational and industrial associations underscore his commitment to fostering design as a field. Gismondi’s death in December 2020 marked the end of an era but left a lasting imprint on the design world.
