Alison Milner – British Designer in Eclectic Materials

Alison Milner was born in 1958 in Sevenoaks, Kent, England. She pursued her early education at St. Mary’s School of Nursing, where she trained and worked as a student nurse from 1978 to 1981. However, her passion for design led her to Middlesex Polytechnic, where she earned a BA in Three-Dimensional Design focusing on Furniture Design in 1985. She later obtained an MA in Furniture Design from the Royal College of Art in 1987, receiving the prestigious Prince of Wales Award for the most distinguished female entrant.

Milner’s career is characterized by a multidisciplinary approach, integrating furniture, surface design, and public art elements. She also developed a bedroom furniture collection for batch production by Indian artisans for India Works in Chelsea, demonstrating her interest in ethical manufacturing and sustainability.

One of her standout creations is the Mirror Lamp, which won second prize in the Design Council competition ‘British Design in Japan’ in 1987 and was exhibited at the Seibu Department Store in Tokyo. Beyond furniture, Milner has expanded her practice into surface design, ceramics, and public installations, frequently working with materials such as glass, enamel, and printed textiles.
