Herbert Bayer (1900–1985) was one of the twentieth century’s most influential graphic designers, with a career spanning more than six decades and two continents. As a student and teacher at the Bauhaus, he pioneered a new approach to graphic design by combining geometry, photomontage, functional analysis, and simplified typography. This book chronicles Bayer’s design process. His early student works with hand lettering, to his later works with mechanically printed typography and hyperreal photo illustrations. The poetic and arresting works are drawn from the Merrill C. Berman Collection and the Smithsonian Design Museum’s Cooper Hewitt collection. Numerous works have never been published before or are being exhibited in colour for the first time.
